What is an Ultrathin Microtom?
Ultramicrotomy
Ultramicrotomy is mainly used as a sample preparation method for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It permits the internal fine structures of samples to be visualized and analyzed at nanometer scale resolution. It produces ultrathin sections of samples in a fast and clean manner. A key advantage of ultramicrotomy is the size and homogeneity of the electron-transparent area within the sections and the speed at which the sections are produced. ![]() Ultramicrotomy can be used for multiple types of samples, including biological specimens and industrial materials, e.g. polymers (rubber and plastics) and ductile, hard, or brittle materials (metals or ceramics).

TEM Sample Preparation
The biggest feature of the transmission electron microscope is that the resolution is extremely high and can reach the atomic level. The electron beam of a transmission electron microscope must pass through the sample, so the sample must be thin enough. If the sample is thick, it will be scattered and little will penetrate. The TEM sample we obtain for observation is called TEM sample preparation.

Glass KnifeThe glass knife making machine is used to continuously break strips of glass until a triangular glass knife with one shoulder and one edge is formed. The blade side of the glass knife is used for ultrathin sectioning under electron microscopy.
The fracture principle is the balanced fracture method: draw a straight scratch on the glass, and impose symmetry on both sides of the scratch. equal downward force, and at the same time apply a vertical upward force directly below the scratch. When the force reaches a certain magnitude, the glass will break along the scratch. Since the forces on both sides of the scratch are equal, the fracture is balanced. The fracture surface it's flat. Breaking process: Take a rectangular glass strip with a length of 400mm and a width of 25mm, and break it into 200mm in sequence. 100mm, 50mm, 25mm length, and then break the 25mm glass square diagonally into a triangular glass knife. ![]() Related Products
